Individual Advocacy
One-to-One Support

Individual advocacy is one-to-one support from an advocate.

An advocate works with you when:

  • you have a problem

  • something is not fair

  • you are not being heard

  • you need support to understand your options

 

Advocates:

  • are independent and on your side

  • support you to understand your rights and choices

  • support you to speak up and make decisions

Why Individual Advocacy Matters

Individual advocacy:

  • works with people to resolve serious or urgent issues

  • supports people to be heard in complex situations

  • works to protect rights and reduce harm

Parts of Individual Advocacy

Speaking Up for Rights
Advocacy supports people with disability to be treated fairly in places like school, work, and healthcare.
It supports people understand their rights and speak up about what matters to them.

 

Navigating Systems
An advocate supports people understand and access services, supports, and systems such as the NDIS, healthcare, and education.

Providing Support
An advocate works alongside a person to provide independent support.
This may include supporting them prepare for meetings, understand information, and make informed decisions.

Problem-Solving
An advocate supports people to address specific issues such as unfair treatment, barriers to access, or problems with services.

Supporting Rights in Practice
Advocates support people to raise concerns and take action when their rights are not being respected.
This may include supporting them use complaints processes or connecting them with other services, including legal support where needed.

Individual Advocacy Can Support You With

Advocacy support may include:

  • understanding services (like health, education, or supports)

  • resolving problems or complaints

  • support at meetings or reviews

  • supporting you to communicate your views

  • connecting you with other services (including legal services if needed)

 

Examples of Individual Advocacy

  • Getting support to challenge a decision

  • Support at a meeting with a service provider

  • Support to raise concerns about unfair treatment

  • Support to understand your options and next steps

Who can use Speak Out?

​Speak Out supports people with disability.

Whether we can provide advocacy depends on:

  • the issue

  • whether our service is the right fit

  • advocate availability

If we are not the right service, we will help connect you to one that is.
